  Estamos viviendo una transición de época, con constantes turbulencias y notables contrastes. Es un momento de crisis y somos muchos los que tenemos la convicción que las crisis se superan mediante la cooperación y el esfuerzo mancomunado, para lo cual el espíritu solidario del ser humano juega un rol aglutinante que permite el suave acople de los engranajes. El padre de la sociología moderna, Emile Durkheim, advertía que, sin ese componente unificador, armonizador, la cohesión social se iría deshilachando hasta caer en mil pedazos. Hoy, esta distopía de un resquebrajamiento social general no deja de ser una posibilidad. En este primer cuarto de siglo las tensiones parecen ir en aumento, vivimos una época en que las sociedades oscilan entre fuerzas centrífugas que intentan llevar hacia un centro solidario los pedazos dispersos, y fuerzas centrípetas, que dispersan las voluntades, dejando tras su paso desechos sociales. We are experiencing a transition of epoch, with constant turbulence and notable contrasts. It is a time of crisis and there are many of us who have the conviction that crises are overcome through cooperation and joint effort. The spirit of solidarity plays a unifying role and allows the smooth coupling of the social gears. The father of modern sociology, Emile Durkheim, warned that without this unifying, harmonizing component, social cohesion would gradually fray until it breaks into a thousand pieces. Today, this dystopia of a general social breakdown is  a very real possibility. In the first quarter of our century, tensions seem to be increasing. Societies are torn between centrifugal forces that try to bring people together in solidarity, and centripetal forces that scatter people’s intentions,  leaving behind social antagonisms.   Una de las características de la democracia es que cada tanto surgen candidatos a la presidencia que vienen de abajo. Dirigentes que surgen de las clases populares, sin títulos universitarios en Estados Unidos o en su propio país. Personas que conocieron la pobreza en primera persona, que hablan y gesticulan como el pueblo. Pedro Castillo es uno de ellos. Maestro de primaria, líder del movimiento magisterial peruano, de Cajamarca, en el norte del país, orgulloso de ser “rondero”, es decir perteneciente a un tipo de  organización comunal rural que surgió en la década de los 70 en el Perú. Los antecedentes de este tipo de liderazgo en nuestra región los encontramos en Lula, dirigente metalúrgico y, quizás, más cercano a Pedro Castillo, Evo Morales, dirigente cocalero boliviano. One of the characteristics of democracy is that from time to time there are candidates for the presidency that rise  from below. Leaders who emerge from the popular classes, without university degrees in the United States or in their own country. People who knew poverty in first person; who speak and gesticulate like the people. Pedro Castillo is one of them. Primary school teacher, leader of the Peruvian teacher movement, from Cajamarca, in the north of the country, proud of being a “rondero”, that is, belonging to a type of rural communal organization that emerged in the 1970s in Peru. The antecedents of this type of leadership in our region can be found in Lula, a metal worker union leader and, perhaps, closer to Pedro Castillo, Evo Morales, a Bolivian coca grower leader. However, the candidacy of Pedro Castillo, although on the left, has put the left in trouble.
